Social lawn bowling games (we call them jitneys) are the central activity of the club. These jitneys are very informal – just show up ten minutes before the starting time, and someone will organize participants onto different rinks, depending on numbers. The social atmosphere on the lawn bowling green continues in the clubhouse afterwards, with tea, cookies and social chat for those who want to stay.
Jitneys are currently scheduled three times per week – Tuesday and Friday mornings at 10 AM, and Sunday afternoons at 1:30 PM.
For our more-competitive and slightly-competitive bowlers, we run a singles house league. This provides one singles game per week throughout the season, divided into three sessions of six weeks each, with random draw for opponents.
Play is usually on Monday evenings, or by agreement of the two competitors. To encourage participation, we allow for shorter games upon request. The winners of the three sessions compete against each other at the end of the season for the Daley-Trottier Trophy.
Fun day tournaments are our most popular organized events, often with an unusual format. Our most popular format uses two jacks (the small ball that you want to end up closest to), with one jack placed at the shortest possible distance, and the other at the longest, and you can bowl towards whichever jack you want. Scoring is 4-3-2-1 for the four closest bowls on each jack.
We introduced this format to give equal opportunity to bowlers of different strengths, with the possibility to deliver all of your bowls towards the shortest jack. Each player can join in as many (or as few) rounds as they like. There are two winners, one for the highest overall score, and the other winner closest to their predicted score. By tradition, each winner gets a round of applause and an extra cup of tea.
Initially, all you need is comfortable clothes, a sun hat and flat-soled shoes. Bowls and other equipment, such as delivery assistive devices for disabled bowlers, are supplied by the Club. Eventually, once the game hooks you, you may purchase a set of bowls for your own use.
A four-week ‘introduction to lawn bowling’ coaching course covers basic skills, the general flow of a game, tactics, singles, pairs and triples formats – in fact, everything you need to know to join in the club’s activities and start enjoying the sport. This year’s course will run for 1 hour on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm starting on June 4, 2025.
